Residents of the Miguel Hidalgo mayor's office achieved their main objective. The attempt to carry out this project in a public space, such as Parque Lira, revived the controversies and tensions between Morena and the local panista mayor, Mauricio Tabe. Morena, in turn, backed these protests with initiatives in the Legislative Branch, and Head of Government Clara Brugada criticized the mayor from the National Action Party. With an eye on the World Cup, Brugada inaugurated new works in Coyoacán. Last weekend, following the repression of protesters last week, local deputy Cecilia Vadillo and her party colleague Víctor Hugo Romo demanded the dismissal of the Miguel Hidalgo mayor's office security commissioner, Marcela Gómez Salce, for leading a 'violation of human rights' and attacking the right to 'freedom of expression.' 'The mayor does nothing about the clandestine dumps in all the colonies, but he does get involved with the activists,' pointed out the leader of the 'guinda' party. Víctor Hugo Romo detailed that the 'guinda' party presented the corresponding complaints before the Human Rights Commission, the Prosecutor's Office, and the local Comptroller's Office to investigate the hiring by the mayor's office of a private show promoted by a Spanish company. After weeks of protests and mutual accusations between the ruling party and the opposition, this Thursday the private company Beste Templen, which was organizing a show in Parque Lira authorized by the panista mayor, Mauricio Tabe, confirmed that it would abandon its activity in that public space after being observed by the Attorney for Environmental and Territorial Ordering (PAOT) and the Administrative Verification Institute (INVEA) for not having the necessary permits or authorizations. As detailed by LPO, a group of neighbors from Miguel Hidalgo began a series of protests a few weeks ago against the show that the panista mayor had set up, as it curtailed the right to public use of Parque Lira. The peak of the tension occurred last week when the group of protesters was repressed by local authorities, which led to the detention of three people and the hospitalization of an elderly woman. They point to José Carlos Acosta for the tensions in Morena in Miguel Hidalgo. In this context, the INVEA authorities proceeded this Wednesday with the closure of the 'Alice in Wonderland' show after verifying that 'there were no clear or transparent conditions for the intervention in the park, nor guarantees for its conservation as a public space.' From the very beginning, a group of neighbors denounced that the local government was seeking to 'privatize' its use, limit its access, and restrict entry, as the setup of the show occupied a large part of it. In this way, the same cannot be carried out until its legal situation is resolved with the demarcation government and the central administration of Mexico City. As a result, this Thursday the INVEA and PAOT authorities announced that the company Beste Templen confirmed that it will not continue with its work 'by considering that it was not viable to continue with the procedures for the missing authorizations, as well as for lacking the technical and operational conditions necessary for the development of the event.' 'There were several crimes: abuse of authority, improper use of public office, violence, repression, and injuries,' they added.
Mexico City Residents Succeed in Closing Private Park Show
After weeks of protests and clashes with police, the private company organizing a show in Parque Lira without permits announced it would cancel the event. Residents accused the mayor of trying to privatize the public space.
